My Running Faves & Must Haves!

Before I start the list, I want to mention that I purchased all of the products below myself and was not compensated by the companies in any way. The products are my opinion only and if you prefer something else or if you have other things that might be beneficial to me and my readers, please leave comments, so we can share our knowledge so we can all have better running experiences.

1) First and foremost I have to say that my Garmin Forerunner 610 watch is something that I could not survive without. Yes, there are lots of free apps for iPhones and I've tried some of them, but without fail non of them are accurate. With my Garmin I always get the same results for distance and it is really easy to navigate. There are lots of awesome features to this watch, but I have to be honest, I really only use the main screen where it tells you what you mileage, time and pace is. That's all I really need, oh and it looks super cute, don't you think!!!!!!!!
My husband got mine at REI, but you can check them out on www.Garmin.com

2) iPod Nano, this has a special meaning to me. My husband got it for me for Christmas the year I started running and it is engraved with my sons name on it. I have all of my favorite running songs on it and use it for every race. It's my good luck charm :) Click here for my playlist.

3) Lululemon everything. I just adore this brand so much. Yes, they are expensive, but the quality is amazing and I have had nothing but great experiences while running in Lululemon. Plus, pretty much every clothing item they have is so cute and the colors are always amazing. Also, nobody can look bad in Lululemon leggings, nobody! They fit so perfectly that its hard to resist on buying a pair of Wunder Unders in every color they come.

4) My Mizuno running shoes. This is my second pair of running shoes since I started two years ago. I love them so much, they are very supportive yet lightweight. I bought the Wave Inspire 10.

5) Running belt, I bought the iFitness double pouch belt because I don't like to check a bag at races. I keep my phone, car key, credit card, ID and lip palm in one pouch and my energy gels in the other, its perfect to clip my iPod onto and it does not have bounce to it. Its not my favorite belt, however it can hold a lot and that's the reason I picked the iFitness one. I'm on a look out for a new one though, so if you have one that you love, let me know!!!
I bought mine online at http://www.fitletic.com, but they always have booth at the Seattle Rock'n'Roll Half Marathon Expo, I bet you can find them at the larger race Expos.

6) Neutrogena Lip moisturizer, this may seem weird for some, but I do have to admit that I have a little bit of an addiction to it. I cannot live without it and if I ever forget to use it, I get super chapped lips. Neutrogena brand is my favorite because its super moisturizing and it lasts for a long time and during runs I'd rather not be re-applying my lip palm every five minutes
I buy these in handfuls since I don't ever want to run out and Bartell Drugs always has them in stock.

7) Band Aid blister band aids, I have found that these are the only ones for me that don't slip during races, no matter how long they are. I even use them on my medial malleolus bones (the little bone sticking out of inside of your ankle). The story behind that is that I always run in ankle socks and during my races I tend to hit my medial malleolus bone with my other leg and it hurts so bad. These band aid help it from getting scratched.
I buy this from Rite Aid, but I bet any drugstore would probably have it.

8) Energy Gels, I have gone thru a few varieties over the last year that I have been running and truly I don't know if any particular brand is better than others. So I just decided which tastes and goes down the easiest during my races that's what I'm going to use. So far I've really enjoyed Vega gels, unfortunately I have not been able to find this branch in the States, I found it during the Lululemon SeaWheeze Half Marathon. I was able to stash some aside for a few races. Once I ran out though, I went for the Honey Stinger Energy Gels, I like the taste of these, but just like any other gel it leaves a weird layer on the top of my mouth and it takes me a few cups of water during the races to wash it down with. My favorite flavors a fruity though (berry, banana, orange, etc), nothing too sweet. I don't like flavors like peanut butter or chocolate.
I buy the Honey Stinger ones from REI, http://vegasport.com/product/endurance-gel/

These are always with me when I go to a race, let me know what are your favorites, so I can try something new, you never know, I might just be missing out on something.

Please subscribe if you like what you read!!!

See you at my next race.

Tacoma St. Patty's Day Kids Run 2014!

The reason I chose this race for Chase to do is that they were actually giving the kids race finishers a medal as well as a ribbon. Its pretty rare to find kids races that provide a medal and I thought it would be really fun for him to get a medal of his own.

How cute is he???
Since this race was in Tacoma and we live in Kirkland, I knew that I had quite a drive down there, so I made sure to get up early to make sure I got down there in time. The only problem was that the kids race didn't start until 11:00 which was super nice, however the packet pick up ended at 8:30. So I had to be down there by 8:30 and then hang out for 2.5 hours until the kids race started. I had paid $5.00 extra to pick the packet up on race day, they did have packet pick-up the day before, but it was way too far for me do drive just to pick up a T-shirt. Speaking of shirts, the race did come with a cute kid size T as well and I think I paid $20 all together including the packet pick-up fee, which by the way I could have gotten away without paying it since they didn't even check to see if I had prepaid for it or not. Oh well, it goes for a good cause at least.

So we hung out at Tully's for a few hours and had some breakfast, to kill some time before the race. The weather had been kind of iffy, rainy and then nice and rainy again, I kept hoping for a dry race and it stopped raining right before, which was super nice for the kiddos.

I had only found a parking space for 2 hour parking, but it was nice that the kids race was later in the day, by the time my parking meter had run out the half marathon runners were leaving and there were plenty of great spaces by the starting line to choose from, so I moved my car and off to the starting line we went.

I love that both of his feet are airborne in this picture!

This was a 1K race and there were probably about 50 kids or so, some really small, some that could have probably ran the 5K, but fun for all nevertheless.

Off goes the air horn and off goes Chase, he always starts out super fast, its impossible to try to pace a 5 year old kid, so I just let him go and told him that he could walk whenever he wanted to. So we ran a little and walked a little. Chase is super competitive, so when he saw kids smaller than him passing him, he just took off without looking back half way through, so fast that I had a hard time keeping up (needless to say, I should probably start training for my marathon in October). He bolted through the finish line, we even had somebody yell front he sideline "Mom, keep up!"

Chase got his medal and a finishers ribbon, the medal was the same as the half marathon finishers, but he didn't care, he was super happy about the glittery colorful St. Patty's Day medal.

At the finish line they had Little Caesars Pizza, bananas, grapes, candy and water. We grabbed a bite and headed to the Tacoma Children's Museum for some fun.

Hope you enjoyed the recap, I would definitely recommend this kids race for all ages of kids, there was no rush, even the littlest ones could make it.

Let me know of any kids races you or your children have participated in the comments below, I'm always looking for something new.

Thanks for reading and keep on running!

Lululemon SeaWheeze Half Marathon 2014!

I GOT IN!!!

So this is a crazy story, I mean not that crazy, but my goodness who would have thought that this would sell out this fast.

Here is how it all started:

The registration was supposed to open on January 23rd, 2014. I had been waiting for this day since I crossed the finish line in August of 2013 at SeaWheeze. This is by far my favorite race ever, even more than the Disney ones. Well, I don't know, they are pretty close, I mean, Lululemon throws one mean party!!!

The day of the registration I just happened to have a meeting for work and I had to excuse myself to go and use the bathroom, just so I can get on my phone at 10AM to register as soon as it opens. I'm standing there trying to log on and the site just keeps loading and crashing and finally 30 minutes later (that's right, 30 minutes later, I don't know what my co-workers thought of that...) I gave up and figured if I had problems logging on others must have as well. After my meeting I decided to check out the SeaWheeze site on my laptop to see if I would get a better connection and I see this...

Thats a huge bummer, they were already 20% sold out and there had to be soooooo many people trying to register for the website to crash. So they had pushed registration back until February 3rd, that seemed so far away and I was so afraid that I was going to forget. Immediately I set myself all sorts of reminders and specifically told my boss that I needed to take a break at 9:59AM on February 3rd. I was shocked how popular this race had become, in the past two years I registered within a week and there were still plenty of spots open.

Anyways, here come February 3rd and I'm eagerly sitting at my computer and on my phone, I figured at least I would get two chances if one failed, I would still have an opportunity. They had changed the registration this time around though. Once enough people had started registering they started putting people in a queue, who might or might not get in. This seemed like the registration for Comi-con or something, so crazy. They didn't have us pick the shorts at registration, it would have taken too much time and also they only gave you 10 minutes to register once you got in. There was even a count down clock as I was filling out the form, this did not help with my already high anxiety and stress levels.

Like I already said, I got in right away, I kept refreshing the site every second and finally my computer was faster then my phone and I was in and filling out the registration form. I knew from the earlier site crash that there were going to be so many people trying to register and that this would sell out in the matter of minutes, so I made sure that I was on the site at registration opening. Just like I thought, seemed like it sold out in about 10 minutes or so. I might be wrong, but I tried logging on later and it said that it was all sold out :(

Needless to say, I'm so happy and so excited about this race, I wouldn't miss it for the world. For all my friends out there, next year, please make sure you are on it the minute it opens, otherwise you'll miss out on the best race EVER!!!

Let me know if you were able to get in and hopefully I will see  you there in August!!!

P.S. They did change the date this year, it will be August 23rd, 2014!!!

Love,

Seattle Marathon and a Half Marathon 2013!

My goal of 13 13.1 milers in 2013 has officially been completed!

It all ended with the Seattle Half Marathon. It was on the very first day of December, the weather promised us lots of cold wind and rain, but we ended up having a beautiful fall day, go figure, huh?

I was super excited about this race, I hadn't had a large race since the Lululemon SeaWheeze one in August, so I was courius to see what the expo was going to be like and to see how different the course was from the Seattle Rock'n'Roll Half.

The expo took place at the Westin hotel in downtown Seattle, I decided to go the day after Thanksgiving, big mistake by the way with black Friday and all. Anyway, I needed to go and it was my day off from work, so might as well. It wasn't nearly as big as the Rock'n'Roll one, but they did have a fair amount of booths there. I ended up buying a 13.1 window sticker for my car and a beautiful pendant that had the state of Washington on it with the word "run" inside and a separate little 13.1 round pendant. I figured what is the best way to celebrate my 13 races than these.

The hardest part for me for this race was how I was going to dress. All the other races have not been rainy or cold and the weather forecast promised cold winds and 100% chance of rain. I brought my rain jacket with me, but once I got downtown the weather looked decent and people weren't wearing anything heavy and I did not want to be carrying around a jacket that I wasn't going to wear.

I have to start from race day morning. If you are thinking of running this race next year, please take my advice and wake up extra early to give yourself tons of time to get downtown and don't take the Seattle Center exit, instead take the next exit down and find a nice empty lot a few blocks away. This was the mistake I made. I thought I had a bunch of time, however I did not anticipate the traffic to be so bad and everybody was taking the same exit that backed up all the way to the Space Needle. It was a nightmare. I thought that I was not going to make it to the starting line. The race started at 7:30AM for the half marathoners, I was so lucky to find a parking space within minutes of the start time. I was running there and I could hear them singing the national anthem as I was sprinting down the street. They once I made it there I couldn't find an entrance to the start line, they had blocked off the whole street, I guess this was a nice warm up, but I literally got into the crowd as I heard the gun go off. Wow, this was even closer than my Tinkerbell Half Marathon and I promised myself I would not do that again.

Like I said earlier, when I looked at the map it looked really similar to the Seattle Rock'n'Roll Half, however when I was finished with it, I realized that it was actually much different. This was my favorite course out of all the Seattle races I ran this year. Mostly flat, lots of city and water views, some paved trail and beautiful Seattle of course.

I felt great during this race, if you have read my previous blog posts, you know that I have not trained for any of my races this year. I did go swimming a lot in between this race and my last and I think it helped with my stamina. I ran thru the whole thing, with some minor stops to take my energy gels and one bathroom break. The water stations were very well stocked and there was support and cheering all throughout the course.

It finished at a high school football field which was kind of cool and the finish line support was great, with lots of snacks and drinks. I just grabbed a banana and some water and went home. I'm not huge on sticking around these things because I'm always by myself and its kind of pointless to be just standing around people watching after 13 miles.

Overall I would definitely recommend this race, I loved it so much that I'm thinking about doing it again next year. They do have a kids marathon as well the day before, I think I'll sign my son up for it and we'll brave it through together.

And so this year ends with at least one of me finishing at least one of my resolutions. Time to starting thinking of next year!

Hope to see you at my next race, this was just the beginning, maybe a marathon next?!?!

Bellingham Trail Half Marathon 2013!

Half Marathon # 12 finished!

I was having a really hard time finding a half for the month of November, for some reason the only ones I could find were trail runs and most of them looked very unprofessional and didn't include timing of the race or really any support on the course.

Finally I came across this race and the reason I couldn't find it earlier is that they had added a half marathon last minute (there was a marathon also). When I went to sign up for this race, they were all sold out :( however it still let me register incase any spots opened up. Sure enough, about a week before the race I got an e-mail saying that I got a spot to run. I was super excited but nervous at the same time. This was going to be my very first trail run, EVER! So I decided to go and do some more research on this race and see what it was all about.

The first thing I did was go on their web site, you can check it out at bellinghamtrailmarathon.com, they do a ton of trail runs if you are interested. I clicked on "About the Marathon/Half" and this is what I read "The marathon is a stunning mix of trail running in Bellingham with lots of tough climbs on single track trails, as well as fast interurban trails and a short road section. With 5,000 feet of climbing, this may be the toughest marathon in Washington!" What?!?! Toughest marathon in Washington? What did I just get myself into... Now granted, this was about the marathon course, so I told myself, this is not what I'm running, right? I'm doing the half, that can't be that bad, let me find out more about the half. This is what I find under "Distance/Elevation Gain: 13.1 miles with 2,500 feet of climbing". I guess that was better than 5,000 feet of climbing? It was too late to turn back now, I needed this race and there was nothing I could do about it now, except to Google how many stories is 2,500 feet, do you know what it said? 230.9 stories!!! Yikes!

Besides the elevation, which I couldn't do anything about I kept worrying about getting lost on the trail. First of all, I'm not a hiker, I think I've only been on one hike in my entire life and that was only three miles, second of all, I had no idea that this was even a problem on trail runs. Apparently that's a huge problem and I was telling all my friends that if I don't show up for work the next day they know where to come looking for me. It was kind of a joke, but I really was worried about it. Apparently somebody had taken down all of their signage the night before the race and they had to go and put up all new signs the morning of the race.

Finally it was time to face my fears and get in my car and make the hour and a half drive to Bellingham. It was raining in Kirkland when I left, but by the time I got there the weather was perfect. We were instructed to bring warm clothes, wear gloves and a hat as in the past they have seen snow on the top of the mountain trail. I was wearing three layers of clothing a pair of gloves and a head band. Since it was a trail run the aid stations were a few and far between (2 miles, 8 miles and 11 miles) so it was recommended to bring your own water. Thankfully I had a three bottle hydration belt at home, I wore that and my favorite iFitness belt for all my other goodies I carried with me.

I got to Lake Padden Park with about a half hour to spare, I was able to pick up my packet with no problem, I was bib #100. I felt great and we all got on the bus to the starting line. This was also my first race that was not starting and finishing in the same spot, it went very smoothly, the organizers were waiting for us at the starting line already and we just waited for the course debrief. It was simple, just checking in, to make sure who is staring, so they can make sure everybody finishes. They did tell us about mile three, to be careful, that's the top of the mountain, lots of slippery rock and sharp mountain cliffs. And off we went.

I was in for a shock, this trail was as hard as they said it would be. I fell back pretty much as soon as we started. These people were hardcore trail runners and with as few runners there were (116 runners) I was worried, I might be last and lost somewhere in the woods all by myself. I tried to stay with the crowd in the back to make sure I knew where I was going. The trail was well marked with pink ribbons and "Wrong Way" signs. There were parts to the trail going up the mountain that were straight up, I had to use roots to pull myself up at points. This was the hardest thing I've ever done in my entire life (well, maybe not the hardest, but it was up there, trust me!). My legs were just killing me, I was trying to use the trees around me to pull myself up and to push myself off. I tried to run as much as possible, but lets be honest, when you are looking at going straight up, its impossible to run, it was more of a climb. I did walk the first three miles and I'm proud to say that, I was so close to quitting. I kept talking myself out of it the whole time. I just had to keep going!

The trail was so beautiful though, once I got to the top, there were beautiful views of the forest and the bay below us, it seemed like we were miles away from the civilization. It was great having this run in the fall, as all the leaves had changed color and tons of mushrooms everywhere. Unfortunately my phone died before I was able to get any good pictures, but it was beautiful nevertheless. I met a girl who ran with me for a while, she was so sweet and encouraging, she had done many trail runs before and gave me great tips. When we got the first aid station, I was so surprised what they had to offer there. They had a ton of food, PB&J sandwiches, grapes, bananas, oranges, GU and energy bars. They had Coke to drink and lots of other soda and energy drinks and water of course. We spent some time there just to recover from the climb and to get ready for the next hike up. We ended up getting separated and I just kept going, I found myself all by myself. I just kept looking for the pink ribbons tied to the trees to show me the way. Finally after about an hour of running by myself I finally saw some racers in front of me and I could not have felt any happier. At this point the trail started going downhill and I was cruising. I felt great running downhill, like I was flying, it made me feel like I was actually getting closer to the staring line ( I mean I was, but you know what I mean when you mind is playing games with you during a long, hard run). At this point I did not want to lose the group I was running with, so I ran with them for a while, but I felt great and I passed everybody and just kept going and going and going.

I was getting bad cramps in my calves, so I had to really watch my stride and how I landed my feet. I was passing a few people as I kept running down the mountain, everybody was so nice. At mile 5 my Garmin gave me a low battery warning, I had already lost my phone, I was really hoping that my watch would last until the finish line. Interestingly enough, at the aid station at mile 8 my watch showed mile 10, that was super disappointing, others were saying the same thing. It was though thinking that I had three more miles to go, but now I had another 5 miles to go. I had already come so far, I could not let my mind get the better of me. It was kind of airy that at each of the aid stations they kept crossing off all the bib numbers to make sure everybody was making it there, thankfully I didn't hear of anybody who got lost.

The last of the race was beautiful as I came to Lake Padden, I could see the finish line directly across. All I had to do is make it there, it was sweet as the people walking their dogs and running around with their children would encourage me as I made my way to the finish. And then my Garmin died at mile 12, I'm so glad that it lasted as long as it did.

I was so proud of myself, I would never, ever do anything like that in my entire life, but I'm glad that I did it and finished it. I came in at 103 of 116, with a time of 4:14:25, I was not last!!! I couldn't believe my time, it was crazy, but the trail was crazy and I was crazy for doing it!

The finish line festival was great, they had amazing wood fire pizza, they were cooking right there, chili and tomato soup with bread. Tons of cookies, chips, hummus and dips, soda and tea and apparently there was pie, but it was gone by the time I got there ;)

I want to thank the organizers for putting together such a great race, yes it was hard, but it took a lot to put this together and thank you to all the volunteers who came out and supported us and all the other racers who were so supportive and wonderful.

See you at my next race at the Seattle Half Marathon, my last one for the year!!!

P.S. It took me four days to recover and not feel any pain in my legs.

Sammamish River Run 2013!

Race number 11 under my belt!!!

I signed up for this race because one of my friends wanted to do her very first half marathon with me and was looking for something close to her house. So we picked this race, it seemed easy enough, it was just out and back, very flat course.

We were super excited as time got closer to the race. I could not have been happier to run my first half marathon with a friend. I have to be honest, I was a little nervous, I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to keep up or not. I've been having a lot of knee problems lately, although I taped both knees with the KT tape, I wasn't sure how well it was going to hold up.

The morning of the race I get a text from K and she is telling me that it is pouring down rain in Snohomish, where the race was starting. I was so glad that she had texted me that because in Kirkland, where I live the weather was perfectly fine. I did grab a rain jacket, because I didn't want to get wet and then cold afterwards. Sure enough, as soon as I started driving north the rain just started pouring and it was still pitch black outside. The race started at 8:30, but they were closing the streets to the pre-paid parking area at around 7:30, so I wanted to make sure that we got there on time. K and I met up at a McDonalds and then I drove us to the starting area, which was at the Rotary Park in Everett. The rain was still coming down hard, we decided to walk to the starting line and just kind of check out the area and see what was going on. Thankfully K had picked up my race packet with hers the day before, so we were all ready to go. There wasn't much going on around there and it was super cold, so we decided to go back to the car and wait until about 15 minutes before the start of the race to go back. It was so nice and toasty in the car and by the time it was time for us to head to the starting line the rain had completely stopped. I have been so lucky that I have not had any races up until this point with any rain. It was still a little cold, but we figured it would get much better once we started running. We took our energy gels and off we went.

The course was very beautiful and peaceful, we ran along a river pretty much the whole time. There were huge farms with lots of land and cows everywhere. It was kind of fun that there were train tracks next to the road we were running on and there was a train passing by and he kept blowing the horn the entire time he passed us. As we got to about mile marker 5 we passed a water station and I totally saw one of the volunteers picking up non crushed cups from the garbage and re-filling them with water!!!!!!!!! Do you believe that, honestly I didn't believe it at first myself, but its the truth. I was telling K about it and she didn't believe me, who would, right, because who would actually do that!

A few miles into the race, K's parents called and said that they were going to meet us at the turn around part of the race and that her Mom was going to run back with us. So at mile 5 is when we got to the turn around and sure enough, there they were, it was awesome to see a familiar face and we were able to give our rain jackets for K's Dad to take with him since it wasn't raining anymore.

As we were running back now and made our way back to that awful water station I told you about earlier, they were ALL OUT OF CUPS! Now she believed me that they were recycling the cups from the garbage. So now they had sports bottles and asked if we wanted to get some water squirted into our mouths, this was seriously the most disgusting thing I've ever seen in all of the races I've done. It's not like it was the first time they had put on this race, you would think that they would have been better prepared. Believe me, we got a survey after the race and we gave them a piece of our minds, that's for sure.

Anyway, enough of me ranting about that, back to the race. We ended up walking a little bit during the last leg of the race, but we finished strong. We came across another water station at mile 10 that didn't have cups, so no more water until the end of the race. K's boyfriend ended up coming and surprising her at the end and we all crossed the finish line together and happily accepted our medals!

After the race, they had warm soup, which was amazing, we tried the baked potato, but they also had a veggie minestrone and lots of bread and water to drink. There was a booth with energy drinks and we all scored awesome beer mugs. We got super cold, super fast, so we didn't hang out for too long.

If you are reading, thanks K, for making this a memorable race and hope to do more in the future with you!

Hope to see you at my next race in Bellingham!

Labor Day Half Marathon 2013!

Labordayrun.com
I'm officially done with 9 out of my 13 half marathons this year. Only four more to go, I can do this!

This time it was the Labor Day Half Marathon in Redmond, WA. It started and finished at Marymoor park. I picked up my race packet the day before the race in Seattle and they didn't really have anything fun in the bag, just tons of ads for the sponsors and some other race discount fliers for next year.

The race started at 9:00AM, my least favorite time of day for any half marathon during the summer time anyway. It was already so hot before the race even started, it was estimated to be 82 degrees that day. If I run at the pace I've been running lately with my knee injuries, I knew it was going to be super hot by the time I was going to finish.

I struggled this race, for some reason it seemed so much harder than all the other races I've done. There were a few factors, no on course entertainment, not very many people cheering along the course, the route was boring and it was sooooooo hot and the water station at mile 10 was out of water by the time I got there, what?!?! Those were just a few things that didn't happen, but they did and some of them are what they are and you just can't do anything about it.

The course itself started in Marymoor park, like I said and then we ran through downtown Redmond over to Willows road, which is a pretty big road, so there were cars driving by and kind of noisy. We ran by the golf course, then we turned down to head towards the Sammamish River trail and took that back to Redmond and to Marymoor park.

The finish of this race was my favorite part, not only because I was finishing, but because I was the only one running towards it the last 200 meters or so and all of a sudden I hear footsteps behind me and I look back and this guy is trying to pass me at the very end. There were a ton of people at finish line watching and I turn to the guy as I'm running and go "oh hell no" and I just start running as fast as my legs will go and he is doing his best and we just sprinted to the finish and I BEAT him!!! Everybody was laughing so hard and he came over to me afterwards and told me thanks for the encouragement at the end! It was really fun finishing like that, but I was beat, probably shouldn't have done that, but oh well, I enjoyed it.

They had a band playing and some booths with vendors and a Mac & Jack's beer garden. I didn't bring any cash, so I just walked around the booths for a little bit and headed back home.

As far as my knees went, I did much better than I thought. I was wearing knee supports on both knees and downed three Advil before the race and three more half way through and I made it to the end without too much pain. I feel like the supports definitely helped and I hope that I'll be able to finish my challenge for the year as I had wanted.

Hope to see you run!
